Our Skating Program offers classes from SnowPlow Sam to Synchronized Skating. Whether your child wants to learn the basics or refine their skills, we have the perfect class!

Ice Facility
The John P. Chase Ice Facility at the J.W. Hayden Recreation Centre is a premier destination for ice sports enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels. Featuring a full-sized indoor rink, the facility offers a diverse range of programs designed to foster skill development, promote physical fitness, and encourage community engagement.

Skating Classes
Snowplow Sam
Designed for our youngest skaters, the SnowPlow Sam program introduces children to the fundamentals of ice skating ina fun and supportive environment. Skaters will progress through four skill levels (SnowPlow Sam 1-4), buildingconfidence, balance, and coordination on the ice. Once they master the basics, they can seamlessly transition to theBasic Skills Badge Program for continued skill development. Our experienced instructors ensure a safe and engaging experience, making skating enjoyable for all!
Basic Badges
The Basic Badges program is designed to develop a strong foundation in skating skills through six progressive levels (Basic 1-6). Skaters will learn fundamental techniques, including forward and backward skating, stops, crossovers, and turns, building confidence and control on the ice.
Upon completing all six levels, skaters will have the essential skills needed to advance into specialized disciplines such as Hockey, Free Skating, Dance, Pairs, and Synchronized Team Skating. Whether pursuing figure skating or recreational skating, this program provides a solid starting point for all aspiring skaters!
Advanced Free Skate Badges
The Pre-Free Skate to Free Skate 6 plus Axel Badge program is designed for skaters who have successfully completed theBasic 6 Badge and are ready to advance their skills. This program focuses on refining technique in a small group setting,providing individualized attention to help skaters progress with confidence.
Special Skate Programs
These special programs offer unique opportunities for skaters to grow, challenge themselves, and explore new aspects of figure skating!
- Children’s Ice Dance Badges (Levels 1-5)
For skaters who have passed Basic 6, this program introduces the fundamentals of ice dancing, focusing on edges,turns, and musical interpretation. Skaters will learn to glide gracefully and develop rhythm while skating to music,preparing for more advanced dance patterns. - Super Skills for the Advanced Skater
Designed for skaters beyond Free Skate, this upbeat and engaging class uses music and fun drills to enhance edge control, power, and efficiency. Skaters will refine their technique, improving their movements for both synchronized and freestyle skating. - Ice Dance for All Ages
Inspired by ballroom dancing on ice, this class is perfect for skaters who love music and movement! Skaters—either soloor with a partner—will learn the first six dance patterns in the U.S. Figure Skating test structure, making it a great addition for freestyle and synchronized skaters. - Intro to Synchronized Team Skating
For skaters who are working on Basic 6 or beyond, this program introduces the fundamentals of synchronized skating,including holds, formations, and transitions. Using the U.S. Figure Skating Team Badge 1-4 program, skaters will developteamwork skills while learning the art of precision on ice.
Hayden Figure Skating Club
The Hayden Figure Skating Club proudly supports a vibrant community of over 400 skaters of all ages and levels. Club members have access to daily Club Ice sessions—dedicated practice times for figure skaters who have progressed beyond the Learn to Skate program.
Club Ice Eligibility
To participate in Club Ice, skaters must:
- Be a current member of both Hayden and U.S. Figure Skating (USFS)
- Have completed at least Basic 6
- (Skaters below Basic 6 must be in a private lesson with a coach while on the ice)
Club Ice skaters typically train for U.S. Figure Skating tests in Moves in the Field, Freestyle, and Ice Dance, and may also compete in USFS-sanctioned events.
U.S. Figure Skating Membership Fees
- $85 for the first family member
- $45 for each additional family member
- Discounted rate available for new members
- Membership runs July 1 – June 30 and must be renewed annually
Hours may vary during school vacation weeks and testing dates
Club Ice
Club Ice sessions are designed for skaters who have progressed beyond the Learn to Skate program and are committed to advancing their figure skating skills. All skaters must be registered members of U.S. Figure Skating and Hayden in order to participate.
Test Sessions
Hayden hosts official U.S. Figure Skating Test Sessions—typically held on the second Wednesday of each month.
- General Skating is not available during test sessions
- Applications are due two weeks in advance
- Test dates may change, so please call ahead to confirm

General Skate
Enjoy some time on the ice during our open General Skate sessions—perfect for recreational skaters looking for fun and exercise in a relaxed atmosphere.
Important Information:
- All skaters must pre-register online in advance
- Skaters must be current members of the Hayden Recreation Centre
- Check-in is required at the front desk before entering the ice
- Open to skaters ages 4 and up
- Sessions are limited to 40 skaters—no walk-ins will be accepted
- No skate rentals available—please bring your own skates

Ice Events

Holiday Skate Show
Celebrate the season with Hayden's Annual Holiday Exhibition! Enjoy festive performances by our Basic 4 and above skaters, and Intro-to-Synchro class. Free and open to spectators, this cheerful event highlights the talent and spirit of our skating community.

Basic Skills Competition
Join us for Hayden's Annual Basic Skills Competition each Spring! Designed for beginning skaters, this fun and supportive event promotes confidence and skill development in a low-pressure setting. Open to Learn to Skate USA and U.S. Figure Skating members. All participants receive awards!
Spring Skate Show
Celebrate the end of the skating season at our Spring Skate Show! Featuring skaters in Basic 6 and above, this exciting performance showcases the progress and passion of our Learn to Skate and figure skating programs. A great way to wrap up the season with family and friends!
Adult Programs
Join us on the ice with programs tailored for adult skaters of all levels! Whether you're looking to practice your skills during Stick & Puck, enjoy open freestyle time on Club Ice, or explore movement and technique through Ice Dance for All Ages, there's something for everyone. Come skate, improve, and have fun in a welcoming and supportive environment!
Locker Rentals
Locker rentals are available during the Ice Skating Facility season (September through June). Skaters are welcome to store skates, gear, and other essentials for classes and programs. A seasonal rental fee covers the full duration of the ice season. Participants must provide their own locks. Please note: lockers are not accessible when the building is closed.
